Two militants were killed and an Indian army officer was injured Sunday in a gunfight in India-controlled Kashmir, defense officials said.
The gun battle broke out around 4 p.m. and lasted for around two hours in Thonol village of Reasi district, about 180 km north of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
"The encounter has ended in the village. Two militants have been killed during the gun battle but one JCO has also sustained injuries in the
operation," said Lt. Col. Biplab Nath, defense spokesman based in Jammu.
According to details provided by defense officials, a joint party of Indian army and police cordoned the village off, following a tip-off about
the presence of militants there.
The officials have also claimed recovery of two assault rifles from the possession of slain militants.
Unconfirmed reports also said that a policeman also received injuries in the gunfight.
Police have started an investigation to ascertain the identities of the dead militants.
