Sri Lanka's Appeal Court on Monday granted bail to a journalist who had been previously sentenced to a 20-year imprisonment.
J.S. Tissanayagam was sentenced to 20 years on Aug. 31, 2009 for aiding and abetting Tamil Tiger separatism and bringing the government troops into
disrepute due to his writings.
He was held under detention since March 2008, prompting international condemnation of the detention and calls for his release.
Tissanayagam appealed against the conviction and the government told the Appeal Court that it had no objection to the ranting of bail.
