The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is developing a land use plan to streamline all physical developments on the campus.
Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, the Vice-Chancellor, said under the plan, some existing structures would be expanded with dilapidated and outmoded ones redesigned for other purposes.
Already feasibility studies had been conducted.
The plan, he said, had become necessary as the University continued to attract businesses, industrialists, corporate bodies and multinational
companies, which are showing strong desire to establish on its seven square mile commercial area.
Professor Adarkwa was speaking at a ceremony to formally commence work on an HFC Bank funded commercial complex being built at the commercial area.
The $2.4 million complex upon completion, would house a shopping mall, conference centres, digital printing laboratories, offices, bookshops,
supermarkets and a modern high occupancy car park.
The Vice-Chancellor commended HFC Bank for its support to the University and said he was confident that the complex would be of tremendous benefit to
both students and staff and the entire university community.
Mr Asare Akuffo, Managing Director of the Bank, said the project would be ready within 18 months.
He urged the University to embark on innovative academic programmes that would ensure its products become more competitive on the job market.
