Cocoa and food crop farmers in Nuakokrom in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality have appealed to the assembly to rehabilitate a bridge linking the community and Tarkwa township that has collapsed.
Nana Awiah 11, the Odikro of Nuakokrom, told the GNA in an interview that the main road linking
the eight-mile Simpa-Nuakokrom-Aggrega feeder road to the community and the Tarkwa highway had
become impassable due to the rains.
"The collapse of our bridge and the bad nature of the road has made it impossible for the
community to sell their produce," he said.
Nana Awiah said apart from motor bicycles, the sick and pregnant women must be transported to
the nearest health facilities at Tarkwa or the Dompim Health Centre on tables or in a hammock.
He said large quantities of cocoa beans and food crops are locked up in the area.
Nana Awiah appealed to the cocoa buying companies operating in the area and the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly rehabilitate the road.
He said the community school had been closed down due to the absence of teachers and school
children loiter around in the community aimlessly.
Nana Awiah said four teachers nearly drowned last year when the Bonsa River overflowed its banks while they were on their way to school.
"Ever since the incident, the teachers abandoned the school and the children have also resorted to the collection of snails and mushrooms during school hours."
Nana Awiah said the community does not have access to potable water and electricity and refuse
disposal is a major challenge to the community.
Mrs. Christina Kobbinah, the Municipal Chief Executive, said the Simpa-Nuakokrom-Aggrega road
have been captured in a pending programme for rehabilitation.
