Not giving birth to a male child was the only fault of Perveen Akhtar, a 38-year-old poor lady from Pakistan's Punjab province. Due to this error
she was tortured, punished, humiliated and finally divorced in her three marriage experiences that lead to a miserable life.
"From the first husband I had three girls, he kicked me out with three daughters, then I went for another and unluckily I had two more, he also divorced me and then this tragedy happened third time," Akhtar started weeping while telling her plights to Xinhua.
She wanted to know from the society about her fault in this uncontrolled natural process of deciding baby's gender. Now she is working as a tailor in her rented house to earn bread for
her six daughters.
"No one supported me, neither my parents nor the fathers of these girls. I had to do cleaning job in houses to survive and then this NGO (a non-governmental organization) people helped me with sewing machine and money," said Akhtar after
a seminar held to celebrate 100 years of struggle for women's rights by an NGO in capital Islamabad on Monday.
This ill practice has been penetrating in Pakistani society over the years. No matter either the husband belongs to lower class or the upper he is found forcing her wife in illogical ways to
give birth to a male baby.
Professor Qudsia Jamal, a social worker, on the occasion said life of a woman is not a bed of roses in our society, before marriage or after woman continued to suffer under social and family pressure, especially from choosing the gender of the
baby as every husband and his parents want a son from his wife, ignoring the fact that all is in the hands of Almighty God.
