Calm has returned to Burkina Faso where at least seven people died when a mutiny by disgruntled soldiers was quelled by pro-government forces, residents say.
Elite government forces entered Bobo Dioulasso after looting and shooting by mutineers in the city's commercial center erupted several days ago, the BBC reported Saturday. It was the first time army forces had confronted the rioting soldiers since the mutiny began in February over their demand for higher wages. The pro-government forces opened fire on the mutineers at their base camp in Bobo Dioulasso.
President Blaise Compaore has refused the soldiers' demand for more pay but has promised a range of other benefits, the BBC said. The mutiny has been supported by trade unions and civil society groups that demonstrated on the soldiers' behalf.
The victims of the shooting included a young girl, the British network said.
