The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has called on Parliament to pass the Advertising Council Bill by the end of this year to sanitise the advertising industry.
The bill, when passed into law, will bring together relevant industry players to ensure that things are done right to enhance operations in the industry.
At the 26th General Meeting of the AAG in Accra, the President of the association, Mr Joel E. Nettey, said when the bill was passed into law, it would help the industry deal with charlatans who paraded as marketing communication professionals and ultimately protect consumers.
"Unfortunately, the bill went through its first reading but could not be passed before the last Parliament was dissolved. But, hopefully, by the close of the year it will be passed into law," he said.
According to him, the bill had gone back to the Minister of Trade for review and would go back to Parliament for passage into law with some urgency.
To further sanitise the advertising industry, Mr Nettey disclosed that the AAG was working closely with the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to institute policies which would be the focus for the industry and ensure the safety of billboards on the streets.
Highlighting the need for policies associated with billboards, he explained that before a billboard was mounted, there were certain things to be considered to ensure the safety of people.
He said a National Outdoor Advertising Standards Task Force had been set up under the auspices of the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
“Members of the AAG whose billboards were not rightly placed were made to relocate them, after which the task force moved in to demolish the others," Mr Nettey said.
Eight new members of the association were officially admitted. They were Citrosoft Company Limited, Market Place, Admano Limited, K.S. Consult, Eves Media Company, Elique Advertising Limited, Malltraffic Company Limited and the Lutus Limited.
The AAG is the industry body and professional institute for Ghana’s thriving and highly potent advertising and marketing communications business.
The AAG is a non-profit making organisation which is funded by members’ subscriptions.
