The Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has presented a full scholarship to Ms Wilhelmina Opoku, the Overall Best Student in the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
A statement issued by UMB and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the scholarship was presented at the WAEC Distinction Awards in Accra, held to acknowledge and reward the top performing students in the 2018 WASSCE.
The statement said the full educational scholarship would cater for Ms Opoku's tuition, accommodation and books for the entire duration of her university programme.
It said she was also given a laptop and some branded gift items from UMB.
Two other students, Master Sarpong Brago Afrifa and Ms Imelda Naa Ayorkor Adjei, who were the second and third top performers in the 2018 WASSCE respectively, also received a laptop each and some branded souvenirs from UMB.
In attendance were Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Education, WAEC Council Members, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and several other dignitaries.
Ms Opoku expressed her sincere appreciation to UMB for the full scholarship and the honour bestowed upon her and her family.
UMB is a full-service financial institution specialising in customised banking products and services.
Mr Benjamin Amenumey, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of UMB, in his goodwill message, said the UMB first partnered WAEC in 2014 and it was still very honoured to be a major sponsor of the Award.
He pledged the UMB's strong commitment to the development of the youth by contributing to better education in Ghana.
"This educational scholarship is one of the several ways the Bank is contributing to national development, specifically in the education sector, as well as offering brilliant students an opportunity to hone their talents and realise their desired dreams."
