The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has donated 1,000 bags of 50 Kilograms of fertilisers to vegetable farmers in the Adenta and Ga East Municipal assemblies in the Greater Accra Region on Friday.
The donation formed part of the Feed Ghana Project (FGP) which seek to aid farmers boost production and yields.
Presenting the fertiliser to farmers, the Deputy Minister of MOFA, Mr John Setor Dumelo, pointed out that this step was aimed at supporting urban farmers, because so far government interventions have focused mainly on rural farmers and large farms.
He acknowledged that urban farmers in Accra often face challenges, including limited access to farm inputs.
He emphasised the importance of urban farming, stating that not all food items need to come from outside Accra.
Responding to some concerns of the farmers regarding farm land encroachment by estate developers, Mr Dumelo assured that the government would reclaim these lands and allocate them to farmers for temporary use.
In an interview with The Ghanaian Times, the National Coordinator, FGP, Mr Bright Demordzi noted that government under FGP was working to transform the agriculture sector by introducing a science-driven approach.
“The programme focuses on providing agriculture mechanisation services and developing high-quality seeds that can withstand Ghana’s unique weather conditions,” he said.
“According to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, agriculture should be managed by science, not imagination. To achieve this, the government is collaborating with the Crop Research Institute to develop seeds that can thrive in Ghana’s climate,” he stated.
He explained that tomatoes faces challenges growing in the country due to high night temperatures.
He however stated that scientists were working to develop a breed that could produce year-round, increasing yields and farmers’ incomes.
