The Africa Development Council (ADC) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for what it describes as a “high-level show of statesmanship” following his decision to restore radio stations that were previously suspended for regulatory defaults.
In a statement dated June 13, 2025, the Council said the President’s move, although a surprise, marked a moment of exemplary leadership that should be emulated by global leaders.
“The ADC commends the President of the Republic of Ghana for his high level show of statesmanship. President Mahama has surprised his citizens when he ordered the suspended radio stations across the country, which were in default, to be restored,” it said.
The Council, however, dismissed public suggestions that the President’s gesture was a political tactic aimed at pleasing all sides.
“It is not a case of Father-for-All, as being said by a section of the people of Ghana. This is rather a show of high level of statemanship, worthy of emulation by all leaders of the globe,” it said.
The statement further stated that President Mahama’s directive was a demonstration of leadership rooted in forgiveness, moral strength, and national unity.
“The act is a depiction of true leadership, devoid of retaliation, wickedness, power-drunkenness and vilification of opponents,” it stressed.
The ADC also praised the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, for the initial enforcement of the suspensions, saying his decision was in line with the 1992 Constitution.
It further acknowledged that while the minister acted within his remit, only the President could issue a pardon.
“Again, the sector minister is to be as well commended for his show of the spirit of responsibility over the sector. He made the right decision according to the law of the land. It is only the President of the land that can give a pardon. To him, the ADC says kudos!” The statement added.
Highlighting a broader lesson, the ADC urged all leaders to remember that political power was temporary and should be exercised with integrity and reverence.
“The big lesson here is, position is transient. When one gets it, one must use it to glorify one’s Maker. Exactly what the President is doing—an exhibition of leadership by example.”
The ADC described the President’s decision as a bold step toward national healing and cohesion, reinforcing the democratic principles of tolerance and responsible governance.
The Council further called on leaders at all levels—both within and outside Ghana—to take inspiration from President Mahama’s action and prioritise unity and compassion over retribution.
