The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, has expressed a commitment to collaborating with Ghana to ensure Accra becomes the greenest city in Africa by 2040 by aiding Ghana in the procurement of electric vehicles.
This commitment was made during a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, on Thursday, July 17, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two cities.
The visit marked a significant step toward deepening environmental and developmental partnerships.
As a symbol of this growing collaboration, the two mayors visited the median of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, where a memorial will be constructed in the coming years to represent the enduring partnership between London and Accra.
“I am proud of my Ghanaian origin. I am looking forward to expanding our bridge to have a London and an Accra friendship or collaboration,” Sadiq Khan stated.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Allotey described the visit as “timely,” noting that it reinforces Accra’s ambitions to transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport system.
“The visit of the London Mayor to Ghana has benefited us so much. We have a lot of projects that we are doing with them, so he is here to check how things are going, and he is very happy with the improvement he has seen,” Mayor Allotey added.
