The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has received the report on the new guidelines to regulate the activities of the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in the country.
The guidelines, put together by a Committee chaired by the Executive Director of Eduwatch, Mr Kofi Asare, was yesterday submitted to the Minister by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor. Ernest Kofi Davis, at a brief ceremony in Accra.
The Committee, made up of representatives from civil society organisations, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Conference of Heads of Basic Schools, PTA leaders, and regional directors of education, was tasked to ensure accountability and transparency in PTA operations.
Mr Asare presenting the report to the Minister, explained that the framework had placed PTAs beyond their traditional role of fundraising to becoming active participants in decision-making to improve learning outcomes.
He emphasised that the guidelines would prevent past excesses such as extortion and misuse of funds, while also empowering PTAs to partner schools in creating safe and secure learning environments.
Mr Iddrisu commended the Committee for its work, describing the move as a crucial step in strengthening collaboration between parents and teachers. “PTAs are truly back, not just as contributors of funds, but as full partners in improving teaching and learning outcomes,” he stated.
He noted that education was a shared responsibility, adding that the involvement of parents was key to shaping the holistic development of children.
“The Ghanaian concept of socialisation demands that parents support teachers and teachers support parents. The guidelines will help institutionalise that partnership,” the Minister said.
