Students of the University of Media Arts and Communication, Institute of Journalism (Unimac-IJ), are appealing to the government to construct a pedestrian overpass on the George Walker Bush N1 Highway, to enhance their safety.
They said the absence of a pedestrian crossing facility exposed them to daily danger as they crossed the busy highway to access lecture halls and hostels.
Miss Eyram Dugbazah, a Level 300 student, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that crossing the highway was frightening and time-consuming, often causing delays for lectures.
She said her fears had intensified following the death of a fellow student in a road accident on the highway.
Mr Richard Okine, also a Level 300 student, said the heavy traffic and high speed of vehicles along the stretch, made crossing the road extremely risky, stressing the urgent need for a pedestrian overpass.
Miss Michaela Opare, an alumnus, suggested interim measures such as traffic lights or zebra crossings, supported by police presence, to enhance pedestrian safety.
The students appealed to Mr John Dumelo, the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon, to intervene and advocate for urgent measures to prevent further loss of lives.
