Yaw Tanor, 27, unemployed, was on Friday sentenced to six months in prison in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit Court for stealing a foam mattress valued at GHC 100 and sold it for GHC 10.
He pleaded guilty.
In handing down the sentence the judge, Mr Emmanuel Siameh, said he was dealing leniently with him, being a first offender and taking also into consideration the fact that the stolen mattress had been retrieved.
But moments later Tanor was called back into the dock to face another charge of stealing palm oil.
He also pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced to a further 12 months in prison in hard labour.
In the first case Police Inspector Wisdom Nuworkpor said one Patrick Deborah had his foam mattress stolen on June 15.
He conducted his own search and informed the police that he suspected Tanor of being the thief but he went into hiding when he learnt the police were looking for him.
On June 16 Tanor stole three Jerricans of palm oil from a warehouse and a report was made to the police.
During investigations police learnt Tanor was hiding at Bawjiase where he was arrested.
Tanor later took the police to the warehouse to demonstrate how he broke in to steal the palm oil.
