Philip Amponsah, Managing Director of Papfarm, has assured customers that his company will deliver as much poultry as needed during the upcoming AgriFair, which runs from Friday, June 20 to 22 at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Mr. Amponsah said Papfarm is fully prepared to meet demand at the fair.
“We will bring as many as the customers will demand,” he said. “We will have a car on standby to support logistics. Our only challenge may be dealing with the waste generated.”
He revealed that the company currently processes about 6,000 birds but can handle up to 20,000, depending on market demand.
“For processing, we have about 6,000 birds. But we can do about 20,000 on our own. Because of market access, we process as and when the demand comes,” he noted.
Papfarm offers a full range of poultry products, including whole chickens, breasts, drumsticks, gizzards, and other parts. The company operates a processing plant in Amasaman and serves a large customer base online.
Reflecting on the company’s early challenges, Mr. Amponsah recalled struggles with preservation due to inadequate freezing facilities.
“When we started, we had difficulty with how to preserve because we were using ordinary freezers. But now we have cold rooms installed. When I stand by and look at the chicken, it is so beautiful,” he said.
On broader industry issues, Mr. Amponsah pointed out that the poultry value chain remains underdeveloped, limiting sustainability and growth.
“It is a bit of a challenge because the value chain has not been well developed,” he explained. “The value chain includes feed suppliers, transporters, cold room operators, processing facilities, and marketers. If all these are not developed, there is nothing the government can do.”
He added that while raising chickens is relatively affordable, the lack of support systems in the value chain makes long-term progress difficult.
“There are some innovations, but because the value chain is not developed, they are not sustainable. So our leaders should develop the value chain to sustain the industry,” he concluded.”
The AgriFair is part of the broader agenda of the 2025 Citi Business Festival, a month-long initiative powered by 97.3 Citi FM and Channel One TV to drive business innovation and economic transformation.
The fair is scheduled to take place from June 20 to 22, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.
The AgriFair will assemble producers of various farm produce, including crops, livestock, and agro-processed products, to connect with consumers, retailers, and other business prospects.
