Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong has been cast to star alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar in the upcoming revival of the iconic series, which has a pilot order at Hulu. The 15-year-old actress will play an introverted high school student who becomes this generation's slayer. The pilot will be directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao and written by Poker Face's Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
Task, a crime drama coming to HBO and Max this fall, got its first teaser trailer, set to the wailing sounds of Guns 'n' Roses' "Patience." The series hails from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Inglesby, and returns to that show's suburban Philadelphia setting. Mark Ruffalo stars as a troubled FBI agent assigned to lead a team of inexperienced agents to thwart a home invasion gang led by an unassuming family man (Tom Pelphrey). The cast includes Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton. The series premieres in September.
Anna Sawai (Emmy winner for Shogun) and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car) are set to join stars Austin Butler and Jeremy Allen White in Enemies, writer-director Henry Dunham's upcoming A24 crime thriller about a cat-and-mouse chase between a detective and a hitman. The $25 million picture will shoot in Chicago this summer.
Emmy-winning actor and leading Parkinson's disease advocate Michael J. Fox will guest star in Season 3 of Apple TV+'s Shrinking. He will reunite with Spin City creator Bill Lawrence in his first acting role since a 2020 episode of The Good Fight, and his second project with Apple TV+, following the Emmy-winning documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. Details around the role are being kept under wraps. Fox joins previously announced additions Jeff Daniels, Sherry Cola, and Isabella Gomez.
Millennium Media is taking a John Rambo prequel film to the Cannes film market. The project, which will tell the story of Rambo's experiences during the Vietnam War that led to him becoming the action hero of First Blood and Sylvester Stallone's other Rambo films, is being written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam) and directed by Jalmari Helander (Sisu). Stallone is described as being aware of but not involved with the project, which is slated to shoot in Thailand in the fall. Stallone's last Rambo movie, Rambo: Last Blood, came out in 2019.
Adam Sandler posted a funny and sweet tribute to Morris the alligator, the animal performer who shared a memorable scene with him in Happy Gilmore and passed away at age 80 (approximately) on Sunday. Toronto International Film Festival's People's Choice Award is renowned as an Academy Awards predictor — until last year's The Life of Chuck (which hasn't been released theatrically yet), 12 consecutive People's Choice Award winners went on to receive Best Picture nominations — and now the festival is expanding People's Choice's remit with an International People's Choice Award. The award will allow the audience to vote on non-U.S., non-Canada films that screen at the festival, and will debut at the 2025 festival in September.
Lionsgate will be the studio partner on Mel Gibson's The Resurrection of the Christ, his sequel to 2004's The Passion of the Christ, which until last year was the highest grossing R-rated film in the U.S. and is still the highest-grossing independent film of all time. Gibson made his last two films, Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk, with the studio, and the studio is the library distributor for his company Icon Films. The Resurrection of the Christ is expected to film this summer in Rome, with Jim Caviezel returning as Jesus.
Lionsgate released the trailer for Americana, a neo-Western comic thriller from writer-director Tony Tost (Poker Face Season 2). The Tarantino-esque film revolves around various desperate people trying to steal a valuable Native American artifact. The cast is led by Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney and Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser and also features Halsey, Simon Rex, Eric Dane, and Zahn McClarnon. The film, which premiered at SXSW in 2023, will open in theaters on Aug. 22.
Bob Odenkirk's late-career shift to being an action star continues in Nobody 2, which finds him returning as mild-mannered hitman Hutch Mansell. Universal released a trailer for the flick, which opens in theaters August 15. This time, Hutch is trying to take a vacation with his family, but work keeps getting in the way — in the form of bad guys he has to dispatch with extreme prejudice. Sharon Stone and Colin Hanks join the cast as a crime boss and a corrupt sheriff, respectively, alongside returning cast members Connie Nielsen, RZA, Michael Ironside, Colin Salmon, Billy MacLellan, Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath, and Christopher Lloyd. Cult favorite Indonesian action filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto takes over directing duties from Ilya Naishuller.
John Travolta has landed a whale of a role. The Academy Award nominee will star in orca survival thriller Black Tides from Cliffhanger director Renny Harlin. Travolta will play Bill Pierce, "an estranged father whose attempt to reconnect with his daughter and grandson turns into a harrowing battle for survival when their boat is attacked by rogue orcas off the southern coast of Spain." The film, which is up for sale at Cannes, is slated for production this summer, and will be “shot old-school, with in-camera effects and real water work."
Shogun and Warfare star Cosmo Jarvis is heading to Tblisi, Georgia this summer to star as Joseph Stalin in Young Stalin, from director Géla Babluani and producer Access Entertainment, which funded The Zone of Interest and Conclave. Jarvis will play the future leader of the Soviet Union in his years as a young revolutionary and bank robber. "Set against the backdrop of Imperial Russia’s criminal underworld and revolutionary ferment, the film explores the making of the bloody dictator who would reshape the 20th century through terror, war and ideology — and the largest bank heist in Russian history," according to the logline. The film will be available to buyers at the Cannes film marketplace.
Magnolia released the trailer for Prime Minister, a documentary about Jacinda Ardern, who was prime minister of New Zealand from 2017 until her resignation in 2023. When she took office at age 37, she was the world's youngest leader of government, and gave birth while in office. She led the country through the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting and the COVID-19 pandemic and gained international attention for her unique personal leadership style. The documentary, from Michelle Walshe and Lindsay Utz, is an unusually intimate documentary about a world leader that won the Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary at Sundance this year. It will be in theaters on June 13.
Al Pacino will appear in biographical drama Maserati: The Brothers, which tells the story of the rise of the Maserati to the peak of the automotive world. The Academy Award-winning actor will play businessman Vincenzo Vaccaro, an early Maserati investor. He joins a cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Andy Garcia, Jessica Alba, Gina La Piana, Tatiana Luter, Michele Morrone and Salvatore Esposito. The film is directed by Academy Award winner Bobby Moresco (Crash) and is eying a fall debut.
Emmy winners Sarah Paulson and Toni Collette will play sisters with a troubled relationship in Mother Courage, a family drama that will mark the directorial debut of American Horror Story and The Assassination of Gianni Versace star Cody Fern. Paulson will play an actress starring in a Broadway production of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage whose life starts to unravel as she reunites with her long-estranged sister (Collette) and they confront the secrets of their past. Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest will play their cruel mother. The film will be up for sale at the Cannes film marketplace.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace and Past Lives breakout Teo Yoo are set to star in espionage action thriller Stratagem, directed by Michael Idov and written by Michael and Lily Idov (Deutschland 89). Rapace will play a CIA agent tasked with going undercover to recruit a tech genius (Yoo), who may be the key to protecting defense secrets. But he's no ordinary tech nerd, and they find themselves at the center of a dangerous conspiracy. The project will be available to buyers at Cannes.
Academy Award-nominated Past Lives writer-director is back with a new romantic comedy, Materialists, in theaters on June 13. A24 released a first look at the film, in which Song makes a passionate case for the humble romcom genre. "To talk about love in the way that it exists today is completely worthy of cinema," Song says. The film stars Dakota Johnson as a professional matchmaker who has neglected her own love life who finds herself torn between a wealthy suitor (Pedro Pascal) and her working-class ex (Chris Evans).
The TV Academy announced the 2025 inductees to the Gold and Silver Circle Honor Society, who will be honored during the News and Documentary Emmys on June 25-26.
Inductees include Bill Owens, the 60 Minutes executive producer who left the show while defending its journalistic principles amidst its ongoing conflicts with Paramount and the Trump administration; longtime CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Martha Teichner; and documentary filmmaker Michael Kirk.
The Gold and Silver Circle Society honors industry leaders who have made lasting contributions to the television industry, with 50 years of distinguished service recognized by the Gold Circle and 25 years by the Silver Circle.
