Superintendent of Police Mrs Debora Addison-Campbell of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), has expressed concern about the high level of indiscipline among pedestrians in the country.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday, she said, many of them flouted basic traffic regulation such as walking on the road instead of pavements.
Some pedestrians, she added, cross the road even when the red lights were on and advised drivers to regard the safety of pedestrians when
driving.
Mrs Campbell said statistics gathered for the second quarter of 2010 (April to June) nationwide, indicated that out of 4,841 vehicles involved in
accidents, 432 pedestrians were knocked down, 533 persons died and 2,960 seriously injured rendering victims widows and widowers and disabled.
She said 1,335 cases of vehicles arrested for traffic offences and accidents were sent to court, while 848 were convicted within the period,
which generated GH156,203.
Mrs Campbell stressed the need for drivers to undergo regular training to sharpen their skills in order to follow road traffic regulations.
She said: We combined the enforcement of traffic laws with driver education so that offenders, who would be arrested and fined, would be made to attend classes on driving rules.
She advised drivers, especially motorbikes not to drive without driving license and warned that offenders would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
