The Tamale District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) has celebrated its 10th anniversary. The celebration was tailored to renew the call for the formation of a Northern Accountants’ Caucus to champion development across the five regions in the north.
The celebration, held under the theme: “The Role of Chartered Accountants in Building Trust and Enabling Sustainable Development,” brought together accounting professionals, institutional representatives, students, and partners to commemorate a decade of professional growth, learning, and community service.
Mr Abdul-Rahaman Osman, Chairman, Tamale District Society of ICAG, speaking during the celebration in Tamale, expressed gratitude to the Society’s founding members, whose dedication led to its establishment in 2015 after years of attempts. He said the Society, which started with 70 members, now boasted over 210 members attributing the growth to teamwork, professional discipline, and support from ICAG’s leadership.
Mr Osman highlighted several achievements over the past decade including the hosting of more than 60 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes and three Post-Chartered Diploma courses.
He said the Society hosted one of the most successful National Accountants’ Conferences in 2019, jointly won the Maiden Inter-District Society Quiz in 2024 together with the Wa and Bolgatanga societies, and was adjudged the Best Performing District Society at the 2024 Accountants’ Conference in Koforidua. He said the Society had also contributed significantly to community development by donating to orphanages, renovating the main kitchen at the Tamale Central Prisons, and supporting Saint Charles Senior High School to rehabilitate its boys’ dormitory after a fire incident.
Mr Osman added that the Society’s Sponsorship and Mentorship Scheme had assisted financially challenged ICAG students with tuition and registration fees, many of whom had since qualified as chartered accountants. He appealed to ICAG leadership to revisit plans to secure a permanent office space for the Institute in Tamale to improve professional services across northern Ghana.
Mr Mohammed Salifu Yakubu Imoro of the Ghana Audit Service, praised the Tamale District Society for its strong commitment to professional excellence, ethics, and capacity building over the past decade. He said the Audit Service recognised the Society as a key partner in promoting accountability, transparency, and value for money in the use of public resources.
Mr Imoro noted that the rapid growth of the Society and its consistent delivery of capacity-building programmes had contributed significantly to strengthening public financial management in northern Ghana. He urged members to continue upholding ethical standards, strengthening collaboration with oversight institutions, and mentoring young professionals, who aspired to join the accounting profession.
Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, whose speech was read on his behalf at the event, commended the Tamale District Society for its contributions to professional excellence and community development. He said “Accountants are central to driving transparency, resource mobilization, and efficient public financial management.
As Northern Ghana pursues accelerated development, we need our accountants to form a united caucus capable of influencing policy and strengthening our local institutions.” He encouraged ICAG members to take up leadership roles in the public and private sectors and pledged the Northern Regional Coordinating Council’s support in advancing professional development and promoting financial discipline in the region.
In recognition of the outstanding commitment and contribution of some members over the decade, the Society presented citations to them to honour their selfless efforts in advancing their activities.
