Parliament on Tuesday, February 10, approved a budget of GHC2.9 billion for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for 2026 to enable the organisation to effectively carry out its mandate.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is tasked with mobilising resources to finance and support the provision of specialised medical care for patients with chronic and non-communicable diseases.

In addition, the Fund will invest in complementary programmes, including the procurement of medical equipment, development of healthcare infrastructure, human resource training, and research initiatives.

It is also expected to provide financial support for specialist medical training and research focused on chronic and non-communicable diseases, ensuring improved healthcare outcomes for affected populations.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a government-supported initiative established to improve access to specialised healthcare services in Ghana, particularly for patients with chronic and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions.

Objectives of the Fund:

Provide specialised medical care: The Fund supports treatment for patients with chronic illnesses that require advanced medical attention, often unavailable at general hospitals.

Resource mobilisation: It raises funds to finance healthcare services, equipment, infrastructure, and training.

Invest in medical infrastructure: This includes hospitals, diagnostic centres, and the procurement of modern medical equipment.

Human resource development: The Fund supports the training of healthcare professionals, including specialists, to enhance Ghana’s capacity to manage chronic diseases.

Support research: Funding is allocated for research into the prevention, treatment, and management of chronic and non-communicable diseases.

Financial sustainability: The Fund aims to create a sustainable mechanism to reduce the burden of chronic illnesses on both patients and the health system.

Funding:

The Fund receives allocations from Parliament and may also mobilise resources from private sector contributions, donors, and international partners.
