The Sweden Branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
In a statement issued from Stockholm, the branch described Dr Bawumia’s victory in the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, as a strong mandate from delegates across Ghana and the diaspora.
According to the branch, the outcome reflects the confidence party members have in Dr Bawumia’s leadership, vision and commitment to the core values of the NPP.
It noted that his emergence as flagbearer marks a significant moment for the party as it prepares to engage the Ghanaian electorate with renewed energy and unity.
The NPP Sweden Branch commended the other presidential aspirants for what it described as their maturity and sportsmanship throughout the contest.
It also praised the party’s leadership and the Presidential Elections Committee for conducting a transparent, peaceful and credible primary.
The branch pledged its full support to Dr Bawumia and the party, assuring that it stands ready to contribute to campaign activities, policy advocacy and grassroots mobilisation within the diaspora in support of the party’s national objectives.
“NPP Sweden pledges its full and unwavering support to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Party. We stand ready to contribute actively to campaign efforts, strategic engagement, policy advocacy, and grassroots mobilisation, both within the diaspora and in support of the Party’s broader national objectives,” the statement said.
It further expressed confidence that under Dr Bawumia’s leadership, the NPP would present a forward-looking vision for Ghana focused on economic transformation, inclusiveness, innovation and sustainable development.

Dr Bawumia won the NPP presidential primary with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes, securing the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.
His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent, while Dr Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 per cent. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum followed in fourth place with 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 per cent, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fifth with 402 votes, representing 0.21 per cent.
