Queen Elizabeth II plans to visit the World Trade Center site during a trip to New York in July, the British Consulate has announced.
The queen is also scheduled to open a Garden of Remembrance in Hanover Square in memory of 67 British citizens killed in the Sept. 11, 2001,
terrorist attack on Manhattan, the New York Daily News reported. The visit will be her first to the area since the attacks, although her son, Prince
Charles, and his wife have been there.
At 84, Elizabeth still remains active, making hundreds of official appearances every year, although she travels abroad less than she did when
she was younger. Her husband, Prince Philip, 88, will be with her, officials say.
The queen is also scheduled to address the General Assembly of the United Nations.
The Port Authority referred any questions about the royal visit to the British Consulate General in New York.
The royal couple last visited the United States in 2007 when they attended the Kentucky Derby and were honored with a state dinner at the White House.
Elizabeth's last trip to New York was in 1976 for the U.S. Bicentennial.
