A huge army of boxing fans from Bukom besieged the Kotoka International Airport in Accra yesterday to welcome the history-making national youth boxing team, Black Rockets, from participation in the 2025 African Youth Boxing Championships in Guinea.
Mathias Ashitey, George Dowuona and Desmond Pappoe all won gold in the 51 kg, 54 kg and 75 kg divisions, respectively, to record a 100 per cent success for Team Ghana at the 3rd edition of the tournament for Africa's future boxing stars.
Their historic achievement also placed them third in the overall standings despite their relatively limited number of participants at the event, which ended in Conakry last Sunday.
On arrival in Accra yesterday afternoon, their fans, including friends, families and fight lovers in Ga-Mashie, stormed the airport in fully packed buses and cars with others on motorcycles guarding the procession from the airport through the principal streets of Accra to Bukom, where more people awaited to hail the young heroes.
"I'm super excited, this has never happened before. We never expected this, but these young boys have made us all very proud and made it worth all the sacrifices we made for them to travel to the tournament," a very excited Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) 1st Vice-President, Dauda Fuseni, said.
"We have already selected new boxers who we will fuse with these three to form the nucleus of the team to begin immediate preparations towards the 2026 Youth Olympic Games qualifiers later in the year. The future is very bright," Alhaji Fuseni added.
