Vodafone Ghana has today presented items worth GHC 5,000 to the Autism centre in Kokomlemle, to support continued care for the children at the centre. The donation is in fulfillment of a promise made by Ghana's most respected telecommunications company to donate GHC1 for every 'like' they received on their facebook page to the centre. The '1 like 1 cedi' campaign was started with the aim of raising funds to support Autistic children in Ghana.
The items donated include assorted children's toys and educational materials that will help and support the intellectual growth of the children.
Carmen Bruce-Annan, Head of Corporate Communications commented that "We all agree that these young children need understanding, love, care and support to fully realise their potential, irrespective of their condition; that is why we are so grateful to our 5,000 facebook fans who responded to the campaign, and pledged their support to the kids by liking our facebook page. We are delighted that this donation will provide immeasurable learning opportunities for the children and prepare them for the future".
Carmen Bruce-Annan added that "Vodafone is committed to its brand promise of empowering individuals, groups and communities in the health sector in Ghana.'
According to the Autism Care Awareness and Training Centre, autism is a neurological disorder which leaves people unable to make sense of the world around them, which can cause them considerable anxiety. In particular, understanding and relating to other people, and taking part in everyday family and social life may be harder for them. According to the Autism Care and Awareness Centre, globally, the disorder affects one in 88 children and is the fastest growing epidemic. More children are diagnosed with autism than cancer and HIV/AIDS combined.
