Accra is about to be swept up in marathon fever, as thousands of long-distance runners and spectators get ready to turn the capital into a festival of endurance and pride as the First National Bank Accra Marathon makes its highly anticipated return on Saturday, November 8.
Ghana’s ultimate running carnival, this year’s marathon event will bring together elite athletes, health-conscious joggers from various keep-fit clubs and exciting spectators who will line up along the principal streets of the capital to cheer on the thousands of runners, marking one of the biggest dates on the nation’s sporting calendar.
Now in its third year under First National Bank’s banner, the event carries more than three decades of history thanks to its roots with the Dansoman Keep Fit Club.
From humble beginnings, it has grown into a nationwide movement and a symbol of a healthy lifestyle, unity and community spirit, inspiring generations of athletes, both professional and amateur, to lace up their trainers and test their limits.
The CEO of First National Bank, Warren Adams, says the bank is determined to keep fuelling that passion and building on that legacy.
“The First National Bank Accra Marathon has become an integral part of the community, and we are dedicated to giving it the support and attention it needs to be sustained,” he said. “Our ambition is to create a world-class experience that inspires athletes and celebrates togetherness.”
Last year, more than 4,000 runners and 1,000 volunteers took over Accra’s streets in a dazzling showcase of spirit and determination, and the organisers — Dansoman Keep Fit Club — are promising an even bigger spectacle this time.
"Participants have praised the return of Ghana’s first true marathon, the enhanced spectator experience, and the electrifying atmosphere we worked so hard for," said Benjamin Ahulu, Chairman of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club."
"This year, we’re aiming even higher, and making the race achievable for more people".
This time the spotlight will fall on David Nakousi, the University of Ghana student who stormed to victory in last year’s men’s 42.2km race.
But with a fresh pack of challengers, his title defence promises fireworks.
This year’s competition includes a 21.1km Half-Marathon for 16–25 year-olds, a 10km Youth Race for under-16s, and a 10km Corporate Challenge for companies and groups eager to join the fun. It is a format designed to widen participation while keeping the competitive edge alive.
However, the biggest shake-up is the upgrade from last year’s 15km race to a gruelling 21.1km half-marathon, a move aimed at toughening young athletes and setting the stage for the marathon’s full return in 2026.
According to the organisers, registration is now open at all First National Bank branches or via mobile (71333*40#) until November 5.
